Easy French Letter Writing Tips For Kids To Send Gifts

Writing
At Kidlan French Center, we believe that language is most powerful when used to connect with others. Sending a gift is a wonderful gesture, but adding a handmade letter in French makes it truly special. Writing letters helps children practice formal and informal address, polite expressions, and descriptive vocabulary. Here is our simple guide to helping your child write their first French "petit mot" (little note).
Start with a Warm Greeting
The first step is choosing the right way to say hello. In French, the greeting changes depending on who the child is writing to. We teach our students at Kidlan to use:
"Cher" (for a boy) or "Chère" (for a girl): This means "Dear." For example, "Chère Mamie" or "Cher Thomas."
"Coucou": A very friendly and informal way to say "Hi" to a close friend or a sibling.
Describe the Gift Simply
The body of the letter should be clear and heartfelt. Encourage your child to use simple "Subject + Verb" sentences to describe what they are sending.
"Voici một món quà dành cho toi": (Here is a gift for you).
"J'espère que tu aimes...": (I hope you like...).
"C’est un petit souvenir de...": (It is a small souvenir from...). By using these phrases, kids learn how to use possessive adjectives and basic sentence structures in a practical context.
Add a Personalized Message
A great letter always includes a reason why the gift was chosen. This is a perfect opportunity to practice French adjectives. Is the gift "bleu" (blue), "amusant" (fun), or "petit" (small)? Helping your child describe the object reinforces their vocabulary and makes the recipient feel extra special.
Closing with Love
French has many beautiful ways to say goodbye. For a letter accompanying a gift, we recommend:
"Bisous": (Kisses) – perfect for family.
"Amicalement": (Best wishes) – great for classmates.
"Avec toute mến tình": (With all my love).
Writing a letter transforms a simple gift into a lasting memory. At Kidlan, we encourage our students to grab their favorite colored pens and start writing. It is the most charming way to show the world how much French they have learned!
